We found something rather cute today in Itoshima along Route 202.
A local farmer has set up an old and doorless refrigerator as a self-serve honor-system shop to sell his edamame (green soybeans.) But the fun doesn’t stop there!
The shop’s name is Edamame Ultraman, “uru” sounds like the Japanese word “to sell” but also refers to the superhero, and the edamame packages are labeled “Jyukujo Edamame,” The term jyukujo roughly translates to “attractive older women” or “ripe women.” So be careful if you do a Google search with this word, as the results may not be safe for workspaces. You have been warned.
Hyakushouya Farm, grows rice, wheat, and soybeans in the Nijo-Masue district of Itoshima. Their edamame is sold on the stem in September and October.
Much of his crop was damaged this year by the heavy rains, but some of the hardy Jyukujo Edamame are available for ¥350 a bag. Supplies are limited.
