A Taste of the West Coast in Japan: Unwind at Camosi Brewing in Itoshima
Nestled at the base of Nijo-dake mountain in Itoshima, Fukuoka, a new craft brewery has emerged. Just a 10-minute walk uphill from Chikuzen-Fukae Station, this picturesque brewery, which opened on March 21, 2023, is surrounded by both sea and mountains.

Brewmaster Kou Hanada has chosen to focus on American West Coast-style beers, aligning with Itoshima’s reputation as a “west-coast” vibe region in Japan. At the grand opening, two distinct beers were unveiled: “Wonder Coast,” a hop-forward light pale ale with a bitter and aromatic profile, and “Each Other,” a fruity beer that boasts a subtle acidity.

Visitors can enjoy fresh draft beer at the brewery or take home 350ml cans. Another option is the “growler,” a popular concept originating from Oregon’s craft beer culture. These 32oz (0.9L) containers, priced at ¥8,000, can be filled directly from the tap and maintain the beer’s cold temperature for about 24 hours, thanks to their vacuum double insulation.

Even those who aren’t fans of beer may be enticed by Brewmaster Hanada’s passion for natural wines, or vin nature. Hanada is also planning to open a boutique bottle shop specializing in vin nature, making this brewery a must-visit destination for beverage enthusiasts.
