Exploring Itoshima by Bicycle: The Complete Guide to Rental Bikes

General Tips for Renting a Bike in Itoshima

Plan Your Transportation: Consider how you’ll get to the rental starting point. Some rental locations are accessible by bus, while others may require more planning.
Book in Advance: Many rental services can run out of bikes, especially during peak times. It’s best to reserve ahead when possible. Check the cancellation policy, and if you need to cancel, notify the service as soon as possible.
Bike Size Considerations: If you’re over 180 cm tall, many rental bikes may feel small. Look for services that offer larger frames or bikes with adjustable seats to ensure comfort.
Follow Traffic Rules: Familiarize yourself with Japan’s cycling rules before heading out. In Itoshima, you’ll mostly be sharing the road with cars, and cyclists are generally required to follow the same rules as drivers. Always ride safely. [Here’s a PDF with a good summary of the rules.]
Prepare for Weather: It’s always a good idea to bring rain gear, as weather can change quickly.
Carry Cash: While some places accept credit cards or payment apps, rural areas often rely on cash for transactions.
Stay Hydrated: Bring a water bottle or another way to stay hydrated during your ride.
Don’t Drink and Ride: Drinking alcohol and riding is strictly prohibited in Japan.
Helmet Safety: Helmets are now required by law in Japan. Although there is no fine for not wearing one, it’s highly recommended for your safety.
Check Operating Hours: Some rental shops may have limited hours, especially in rural areas. Be sure to check opening and return times, especially if you plan to ride early or late in the day.
Inspect the Bike Before You Go: Always do a quick check of the bike’s brakes, tires, and gears before setting off to ensure everything is in good working order.
Know Your Route: It’s helpful to have a basic understanding of your route beforehand. Use a map or navigation app to ensure you don’t get lost, especially in rural areas with fewer signs in English.
Bring Sun Protection: If you’re riding during the day, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat or helmet with a brim can help protect you from the sun.
Lock Your Bike: When parking your bike, always use the lock provided by the rental shop, as bike theft can happen even in rural areas.
Pack Light: If you’re planning a long ride, pack only the essentials. Heavy bags or backpacks can make riding uncomfortable.

Basic Cycling Rules in Japan:

1. Cycle on the road and keep left: If you must use the sidewalk, pedestrians always have the right of way.
2. Stop at red lights or stop signs at intersections: Always look both ways before proceeding.
3. Turn on your bike lights when riding at night: It’s required by law and important for safety.
4. Don’t ride side by side: Avoid riding next to another cyclist on the road unless it’s in a designated cycling lane.
5. Keep a safe distance from cars: Especially when turning or crossing intersections.
6. Don’t use your phone while riding: It’s dangerous and illegal.
7. Use hand signals: Indicate turns or stops when possible to communicate with other road users.
a. Left turn: Extend your left arm horizontally / Extend your right arm horizontally and raise your forearm vertically.
b. Right turn: Extend your right arm horizontally / Extend your left arm horizontally and raise your forearm vertically.
8. Don’t wear headphones while cycling: It’s important to stay aware of your surroundings.
9. Drinking and riding is prohibited: Stay safe and avoid alcohol before or during your ride.
10. Wear a helmet: While there’s no fine for not wearing one, it’s now required by law and is essential for your safety.

1. Itoshima Tourism Association

Situated right in front of the North exit of JR Chikuzen-Maebaru Station, inside the Itoshima Tourism Association office, this rental location offers unmatched convenience for cyclists. In addition to picking up and dropping off bicycles, visitors can take advantage of the many maps, leaflets, and knowledgeable staff on hand to help plan their routes. From this central location, most riders head towards Futamigaura and the coastal road, or westward along Sunset Road towards Keya. During winter, many opt for a ride to the oyster huts of Kafuri, with Funakoshi in Nijo also within reach.

Boasting the largest fleet of rental bicycles in a single location in Itoshima, the association offers a variety of options. Most of the bicycles available are small-frame, electric-assist models from top brands like Yamaha, Bridgestone, and Panasonic. The Panasonic models are the newest, slightly larger, and thus better suited for taller riders. While you cannot reserve specific brands or models in advance, preferences can be mentioned at check-in. Additionally, they have five 26” frame cross bikes, which are comfortable for those under 180 cm in height. All rentals come with helmets, and except for the cross bikes, all bicycles are equipped with baskets. The bikes are well-maintained and reliable, ensuring a smooth ride. In case of a flat tire or other issues, the association offers a rescue service via phone or email. The bicycles are also marked with stickers featuring the Itoshima Tourism Association’s contact number, making them easily recognizable to locals who may offer unofficial assistance.

The association uses an online reservation system that requires users in Japan to register with a mobile phone. Overseas visitors with Japanese mobile phones can also use the system via email and will be asked to upload a photo of their passport for identification.

Plans are in place to introduce a one-way rental service in late 2024. We will update this guide once more details become available.
