Shimanoshiki is a farm-and-sea-to-table market run by Itoshima JF (the Itoshima Association of Fisheries Cooperatives) that is loved by Itoshima locals, tourists, and chefs alike. It features a wide variety of fresh seasonal seafood, including Toyohisa-maru’s Mirukugaki brand oysters (Japanese oysters; available in winter only) and Itoshima Sound brand oysters (rock oysters; available in summer only).
The sales floor has shelves for each fishing port in Itoshima City, which allows visitors to enjoy the unique characteristics of each port, such as those ports that practice nisou gochiami fishing and those where individual fishermen land their catches in small boats. The fishermen’s names are printed on the product labels, so some regular customers come back to buy products from their favorite fishermen.
Local farmers bring in seasonal vegetables, fruits, and flowers to sell, and processed foods such as boxed lunches, pastries, and bread are also available. If you visit Itoshima for some R&R, you might want to stop by Shimanoshiki to buy lunch.
