Oyakito

A new teahouse has opened in central Itoshima, offering views of Mount Kaya rising beyond wide stretches of rice fields. It’s a quiet spot to pause, have a drink, and enjoy freshly made oyaki.

Opened on May 10, 2025, Oyakito is located on the second floor of Monogocoti, a lifestyle store that features handcrafted goods from Japan and abroad.

The building, designed by architect Schri Kakinuma, is simple and refined. Inside, attention has been paid to every detail—from the clean lines of the walls to the finish of the ceiling—but the view alone is worth the visit.

The shop’s main offering is oyaki: stuffed buns made from dough fermented with natural yeast, using local wheat, salt, and cane sugar. Fillings are prepared by hand and include options like keema curry with Itoshima pork and vegetables, and Miike takana (mustard greens) with dried baby sardines. There are five varieties in total, both savory and sweet.

The owner, Keiji Inokuchi, works in advertising and product development. The café is a personal project he’d long hoped to realize. All ingredients for the food and drinks are carefully sourced, with a focus on producers whose stories and methods he supports.

Guests can enjoy their purchases inside, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, or take them to go.
