Takasu Night Kagura Shinto Dance

START: Oct 26, 2024 END: Oct 26, 2024

The main hall of Takasu Shrine, said to have been founded during the Heian period, is one of the oldest wooden structures in Fukuoka Prefecture and designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. For over 550 years, Kagura ceremonies have been performed here, and they are still held in April and October. During the Edo period, shrine priests performed the dances, but from the Meiji period onwards, they were passed down to the shrine’s parishioners. Two types of Kagura are performed: “Mai-Kagura,” where dancers perform quietly without masks while holding ritual items and singing to the music, and “Men-Kagura,” where masked dancers enact mythological stories. A total of 12 different dances are presented. The autumn Kagura is a special night performance, illuminated by torchlight. The dancers wear vibrant costumes, performing to honor the gods and pray for bountiful harvests and family prosperity.
