01. Paula Schultz (United States)
Title: Losing Wins

Studio Kura Resident Artist Exhibitions, スタジオクラ展覧会

Paula Schultz is an illustrator, designer and artist. She creates art for labels, packaging, branding, editorials, and surface patterns. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has worked for The Washington Post, The LA Times, and Subaru.

“Losing Wins, gets its title from the direct google translation of my fortune from Raizansennyogi Daihioin Buddhist Temple. My interpretation of this fortune is that even though we lose something important to us, we often gain something in return. This idea has been the theme for my past year after unfortunately losing my job of 8 years, but gaining the ability to travel long term and allowing me to arrive at Studio Kura.

My work here has focused on local flora, fauna, folklore, and customs of the area using natural found objects such as beach wood, shells, and starfish as well as thrifted fabric from local second hand shops creating an improvisational interaction between found objects provided by nature and locally sourced man made materials

Just as the snail loses its shell, it gains a larger more comfortable one. Just as someone discarding fabric from their closet, they gain more space in their home and perhaps even inner peace. Just as the bird loses its egg, it flies away with wings. ”

02. Chris Lightbody (United States)
Title: The Rhythm of Nature [In Itoshima]

Studio Kura Resident Artist Exhibitions, スタジオクラ展覧会

Chris Lightbody holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, majoring in Digital Arts and Technology with an emphasis in Film and Animation and a minor in Japanese.

This exhibition will feature video works created by Chris Lightbody during his residency that capture the beauty of nature.

“Slow down, take your time, breathe
Remember your past and bask in the vibe
Bathe in the nostalgia of youth and imagine a better future

So tell me, what is it about this place?
The circling rhythm of nature intertwined
It’s not like these hills know who I am

But what if they do?
What if the waves are waiting for me?”

03. Lucy Hollier (United States)
Title: For Lack of Words

Studio Kura Resident Artist Exhibitions, スタジオクラ展覧会

Lucy Hollier is trained as a musician and composer and currently focuses on listening, incorporating performance art and multimedia installations.

During her residency, she built desks and tables out of scrap wood and installed them in various locations around Kula. On those desks were postcards with stamps on them, and Lucy suggested that people write haiku on them and send them to someone. Those will be sent out after the exhibition is over.

The exhibit will include the collected haiku, the tables they were made on, and a video.

”sometimes saying less
makes you think a little more
it might be worth it

to send a postcard
with seventeen syllables
across the ocean

I am trying but
when the translation is off
I kind of like it

possibility
how am I to deal with it
make limitations

please enjoy yourself
even writing bad haikus
can be fun today”

04. Erlend Cross (Australia)
Title: Placemaking

Studio Kura Resident Artist Exhibitions, スタジオクラ展覧会

Erlend Cross is an abstract artist based in Perth, Western Australia. Having studied human geography and philosophy at King’s College London, his artistic focus is on the relationship between humans and their environment. Studio Kura’s entrance driveway is the basis for paper works on shoji and washi; to engage with the physical history of this place and the community that sustains it.

Features of erosion reflect combined human and environmental actions. Expressions of humans in nature: over time this relationship produces furrows and scars, as signs of life become embedded in space.
