Studio Kura Resident Artist Exhibitions

Well-known Itoshima artist-run gallery, studio and residency program Studio Kura will host an exhibition featuring the work of international artists. This time’s exhibition will feature works by four artists.

Marie Jose “Portals”
Marie-Jose is an African-American contemporary surrealist artist based in Los Angeles, California (USA).
Mostly self-taught, they began painting in 2016, primarily with acrylic, and convey multiple dimensions of emotion and presence. Their work has been exhibited across California and New York, including the 2020 LA International Art Show. They create paintings that showcase otherworldly portals from the interior and exterior, combining the built and natural environment surrounding the area. Part of their focus while here at Studio Kura is to explore the landscape and create paintings that showcase otherworldly portals from the interior to the exterior, combining the built and natural environments surrounding the area. Influenced by surrealism, the body of work aims to explore the connection of the tangible world to our internal emotions, utilizing the local cloudscape, landscape, and fauna of Itoshima.

Lorraine Mimnagh “Tír an Ghail Ghréine Land of the rising sun”
Lorraine is a contemporary Irish landscape artist and arts educator. She has over 20 year’s experience in art education. She is teaching full-time in a secondary/high school in Co. Westmeath. Ireland. Teaching art is something she is very passionate about. She continues to develop her professional arts practice when she is not teaching her students.
Lorraine was awarded a two weeks Artist Bursary in 2004 at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre Co. Monaghan by Westmeath County Council. (Arts Act Grant) www.tyroneguthricentre.ie Since then, she has been awarded several arts grants through Westmeath Arts office to continue to develop her work as an artist. She has had several solo and group exhibitions over the years, with many works going to private collectors. She has also been back to the Tyrone Guthrie Centre Artist Residency program many times, most recently in 2018. In 2021 she was awarded an art grant for the Artists in residence program at Studio Kura, Itoshima, Japan. She is currently at Studio Kara for June to July 2022.

Kayla Milne “Observed”
Edinburgh-based artist Kayla Milne. Born in 2002 and is currently studying contemporary art practice at Edinburgh college. Kayla focuses on portraiture through sculpture, painting, and photography. Kayla’s main influence is her youth and her family life; in her current course, Kayla is exploring ways to express her influence through various mediums.
Working with other people is a key part of Kayla’s work as she enjoys discovering other people’s ways of life to inform her practice. During the coronavirus pandemic, Kayla built her own business consisting of producing commissions of people and pets; this has been consistent alongside her college practice. During her stay at Studio Kura, Kayla plans to gather information regarding the different cultures and lives of the people who reside in the intimate coastal location.

Jenny Macgregor “Exterior”
Jenny MacGregor is a Scottish contemporary artist who focuses on printmaking and drawing. Jenny is currently studying contemporary art at Edinburgh College and is using these techniques within her work while studying there and learning about new ways of creating work. Her focus at Studio Kura is to look at the landscapes and the outside world around her to get inspiration for sketches and miniature drawings.
