One of the main tourism spots in the Itoshima region is Meoto-iwa in Futamigaura. Every year, a ceremony is held on one Sunday in late April – May to replace the Shimenawa (straw garland) that encircles Meoto-iwa. This year the ceremony is planned to take place on May 1. At 30 m long and weighing 1 tonne, the Shimenawa will require 80 men to hang it over the rock. Work on the shimenawa begins around 9:00, and from around 15:30., about 80 men walk along the ebbing sea and climb up to the meoto-iwa to hang the shimenawa.
