Every year on the night of July 13, Suga Shrine in Shima-Nogita, Itoshima, holds its traditional mikoshi procession and oshioi-tori (ritual purification with sand). Said to date back approximately 400 years to the founding of the shrine, the festival prays for a good harvest, household safety, and good health during the summer. Young participants, wearing traditional fundoshi and chanting loudly, parade from Suga Shrine to the torii gate on Nogita Beach, about 500 meters away, while vigorously shaking red and blue lion heads. Food stalls line the shrine grounds during the event, adding to the festive summer atmosphere.
